Tusushima leopard cat

They were designated as a national natural treasure in 1971. Tsushima cats are also listed as endangered species. During the 1960~1963 investigation, there were 250~300 Tsushima cats living in Tsushima. However, the number has decreased to 80~100 today.

Features

The population of the Tsushima leopard cat has been declining ‘mainly due to habitat degradation and road kills.  

 According to Azumano, a veterinarian at the Yokohama Zoo, from 1992 to January 2022, 122 Tsushima cats were killed by vehicles. “But it’s no good to be critical [of conservation policies] without doing anything, so I am going to do my best and see if anything will change.”
